Part 1: Collage for The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn.
I chose a picture of child abuse because when Huck’s dad kidnaps him and starts to beat him, he decides to run away. Huck’s adventures start when he runs away and his dad beating him is the cause of that.
The picture of the raft shows that a good part of the book is set on the raft with Huck, Jim, the King, and the Duke. This picture is also from The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn.
I chose the picture of a ghost because when Huck runs away, everybody assumes that he is dead because he staged it to look like his death. When Huck find Jim, he is very frightened because he is positive that Huck is a ghost trying to punish him. Also, when Huck ran into Tom Sawyer, he thought the exact same thing.
My last picture is a picture of money. I pictured it because when Huck and Jim are with the King and Duke, all they think about is money. Where they can get it and how to do so. Before they came along Huck and Jim were just relaxing and having fun but when they are around, they work hard and try to trick people into giving them money.
Part 3: Newspaper article, The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn
http://www.thehawkeye.com/story/Lover-thief-111911
I chose this article to because it reminded me of when the King and Duke always tried to get money however they could. They pretended to be different characters and had different scenarios to fit who they were talking to. In the article, Natasha signs the checks with her ex-boyfriends initials. When she did that, it also reminded me about when the King and Duke pretend to be the three girls’ uncles, to get their money because they both stole somebody else’s identity. I think that if checks were around when this book was set, they would have stolen checks without a doubt. Another similarity I saw is that neither of them had any remorse for their actions.
Part 7: Unique word for To Kill A Mockingbird
I chose the word enmity for To Kill A Mockingbird because it means hatred and to cause a problem. I feel like this word sums up the book because hatred is the reason that every problem is started. For example, if people hadn’t spread so many rumors, Boo Radley may have felt safe enough to get out of his house and restart his life. Also if most of the town weren’t racist, Tom Robinson wouldn’t have been tried for rape, his wife wouldn’t have been harassed, he wouldn’t be dead, and Atticus’ family wouldn’t have been taunted for supporting African Americans. All these issues may have different reasons for starting, but they all started because people hated something and wanted to start a problem.
Part 7: Unique word for The Outsiders
I chose the word menage for The Outsiders because it means family and the Greasers act more like a family than a bunch of friends. There are many parts of the book were the Greasers did something for each other that other people, even very close friends wouldn’t do for each other. For example, if any of them needs a safe place to sleep, Darry keeps the doors unlocked. Johnny saved Ponyboy and Dally risked his life for them too. You can really see how much they care for each other when Johnny dies, and Dally kills himself. Johnny considered them to be the only family he had.
Part 9: Review for Of Mice and Men
Of Mice and Men is about two men named George and Lennie who travel together to find work.George has to take care of Lennie because Lennie gets confused a lot and finds himself in trouble. In this book you see them finding work and trying to stay out of trouble in order to keep it. One of their co-workers wife, keeps trying to make trouble and Lennie doesn’t understand why he should stay away from her. I thought this book was a pretty good book because it makes you question the characters moral, and it makes you think about what you would have done. I would recommend this book if you are old enough not to get upset by a few sexual references. I would give this book a 4/5.
Part 9: Review of My Antonia
My Antonia is the story of a Bohemian girl who moves to Nebraska. This book is very interesting because it takes you through Antonia’s entire life. When she first moves to Nebraska, you see her family struggle with finances and when she grows up, you see her struggle with making good choices. It is told through her best friend, Jim. Jim also struggles with Antonia’s choices because he loves her and wants the best for her. This book showed my how difficult it was for immigrants and how hard it was to get out of the cycle of poverty. I thought this was a pretty good and I would recommend this book to anybody who likes a heartwarming story. I would give this book a 3/5.
Part 9: Review of The Outsiders
Before I read this book, I had never really thought about gang violence. Ponyboy and his friends are in a gang called the Greasers. Another gang called the Socs, constantly jump them and beat them up. Ponyboy’s family consists of his two brothers, and the other gang members. Ponyboy and his oldest brother Darry, always get into fights and when one goes too far, Ponyboy runs away with his fellow gang member Johnny. After that, the book continues to go downhill. This books really showed me how social classes can create major problems. For example, being a Greaser feels great to Ponyboy when he is with his friends, but when kids from school call him a Greaser, he hates it. But on the other hand, it shows that two people from different social classes and different gangs can get along. It also showed me difficult it would be to not have any parents. This book gave me a new perspective on gangs. I thought this was a very good book and I would give it a 4/5.
Part 9: Review of To Kill A Mockingbird
To Kill A Mockingbird is one of my favorite books. Scout and Jem start out sounding just like regular kids, playing games and having fun, but the further you get into the book, you realize that their family is not regular.Their family gets looked down upon because they don’t have a mother, Scout isn’t very girly, and they are not racist. When their father Atticus takes on a trial centering around an African American accused of rape, the town erupts. Also, Scout and Jem have always teased their neighbor, the scare of the whole town, Boo Radley. It’s very interesting to see Scout and Jem mature. They begin to question things about their town, particularly racism, and start to realize that all the town gossip might not be completely accurate. I would definitely recommend this book, especially if you want a book that really makes you think, because To Kill A Mockingbird provokes many important questions. It also shows what the 1930’s were like for African Americans very well. I would give this book a 5/5.
Part 9: Review of The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn
The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn was a very interesting book. The adventures were so ridiculous and unrealistic that they were hysterical. What I mean by that is that most of the things Huck does, like getting caught up in with people trying to steal money from orphans, wouldn’t happen to regular people. I think that’s what makes this story so different. Huck hates having to act civilized and so when his father kidnapped him, he doesn’t really mind. After getting beat up many times though, Huck decides that he needs to run away. This book is full of the adventures he goes through trying to stay hidden from his past and the people that he meets along the way. There are points in this book where you’re sure that Huck is going to be found out, and sent back. But Huck and his friends always outsmart everyone. While I did enjoy the plot, the way this book was written was very different. It added a lot to the book because it helps you really visualize Huck, but it is very difficult to understand. I would recommend this book only if you have time to break down the text and really understand it.
