“A few miles south of Soledad, the Salinas River drops in close to the hillside bank and runs deep and green.” (Steinbeck 1)
The Salinas River is the largest river in California and it runs for 170 miles. It is the main source of water for the farms and vineyards in the valley. It was first discovered on September 27, 1769. It got it’s name from a saint that was celebrated on that day, San Elizario.
