Part 9: Review of The Outsiders
Before I read this book, I had never really thought about gang violence. Ponyboy and his friends are in a gang called the Greasers. Another gang called the Socs, constantly jump them and beat them up. Ponyboy’s family consists of his two brothers, and the other gang members. Ponyboy and his oldest brother Darry, always get into fights and when one goes too far, Ponyboy runs away with his fellow gang member Johnny. After that, the book continues to go downhill. This books really showed me how social classes can create major problems. For example, being a Greaser feels great to Ponyboy when he is with his friends, but when kids from school call him a Greaser, he hates it. But on the other hand, it shows that two people from different social classes and different gangs can get along. It also showed me difficult it would be to not have any parents. This book gave me a new perspective on gangs. I thought this was a very good book and I would give it a 4/5.
